Timing Is Everything

Time certainly flies when we are having fun here in Class 2H!  Time is up on our "Time" unit in math, and there is no time like the present to share some of our hands-on learning experiences with you, and have a little fun with some cheesy idioms in the process:)

There was no time to lose, as we kicked off our new math unit by making a HUMAN CLOCK!  We took turns forming the clock face with our bodies and manipulating the hour and minute hands in pairs. Teamwork was key during this unit.

Time was well spent during our next activity!  We practiced telling time to the nearest five minutes by breaking down the clock using unifix cubes!  Then we used our "minute hand," or Disney magical wand, to place it in the correct spot on the clock.  Each cube represents one minute.  Each set of five cubes, is five minutes of our clock face.

Well, they say third time's a charm, so on to activity number three!  In order to help us visualize that every number on the clock represents time passing in increments of five, we used Velcro to make sure the concept of counting by fives really stuck:)  Check us out!

From time to time, you must create projects in math!  Though math is often done with a pencil and paper, kids need time to construct models to help solidify learning and to see concepts in concrete terms.  Here we are building paper plate clocks to reinforce telling time to the nearest five minutes.  The clocks then assisted us in completing our activity sheets.  Give Class 2H a hand (haha) for their projects!

No, we're not killing time with the next activity!  Games are a crucial cornerstone of elementary math.  Playing games is how children learn vital math skills.  Here we are making math fun and getting out of our seats to work with our peers.  The name of the game is Time Bump, and the object is to keep your counter on your time without getting bumped off by your partner.  Remember, it doesn't matter who wins, just that we had fun.  Watch out...don't get bumped off your time slot!

In no time at all, we were ready to begin drawing the hands on a clock ourselves.  We also started to write the time in words not one, but TWO ways!!  How much fun was it to learn how to draw the hands on a hula hoop/dry erase board clock?!  Hmmm...I wish I had one of these at home to practice on!

It's about time that spring is here!  To celebrate the warmer weather and say farewell to our snowy winter, we played a time matching game with the tops and bottoms of plastic eggs!  During this activity, buddies had to work together to create whole eggs that matched up the digital times to either the analog time or word time.  Soooo much fun!!

Next, it was a race against time to see who would be the first to win Time Bingo!  Before playing, we created our own bingo boards.  Then it was time for a classic, or not so classic, game of bingo.  Even though there were no prizes, we all won by having more fun in math.  #mathisawesome

Watch Class 2H tell time!  For this task, we got to first design our very own colorful wristwatches.  We also had to record our given digital time on an analog clock face, or watch face if you will.  Then, we wore our stylish timepieces as we circulated throughout the room to record the time on all of our classmates' watches.  Not only did we have to convert digital to analog and analog to digital, but we also had to write the time in words...TWO WAYS!

They say there is a time and a place for everything, and it was time for us second graders to start learning elapsed time.  Here in Class 2H, we go above and beyond the Common Core Math Standards and push our thinking on a daily basis.  Why is learning elapsed time so important?  Well, we wouldn't want to miss a movie!  Here we are using movie schedules to tackle elapsed time word problems.  Even though this is a super challenging concept, we really impressed with our awesome math skills!

Only time will tell if the incoming second graders will use the mock class schedule created by the children of Class 2H!  In this authentic task, we had to convert word times to digital and analog times, as we put together a subject schedule for next year's youngsters.  Then, we had to put all of the subjects in order from earliest in the day to latest in the day.  What's that?  No, we can't have recess all day long silly!  Nice try though!  Of course we need to leave plenty of time for...drum roll please...MATH!

Finally, a good time was had by all in our culminating activity of the unit.  In yet another authentic learning experience, we used real Magic Kingdom Times Guides to demonstrate our learning of all things time-related.  Whether we were reading analog clocks, drawing hands on analog clocks, writing the time in words, or solving elapsed time questions, we were showing off our terrific understanding of time.  We had an absolute blast using actual times guides from Ms. Hofmann's favorite place in the world- DISNEY.  Between the Magic Kingdom guides and the classroom decor, we actually felt like we were transported to the Happiest Place on Earth!  What better way to cap off a tremendous unit! We hope you enjoy your stay here at the Magic Kingdom and hope you have a magical math experience.

Unfortunately, it was only a matter of time until our math unit came to an end.  But we can live with that, since we had the time of our lives over the past two weeks in math.  Seeing as how the end of the year is quickly approaching, time is of the essence, and we must move on to more math topics.  However, the time is now to have your second grader continue practicing time-related skills, especially elapsed time.  Hmmm...I wonder how much time has passed since I took this last picture...ENJOY!

HAPPY SPRING BREAK!!  It'll be over in no time at all:)
