Welcome to Monsters University! Campus Connection Vol. 1

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome to the first Monsters University Campus Connection blog of the 2014-2015 school year!  Our Campus Connection blog is published about once a month for your reading enjoyment.  Hope you have a scary good time reading!!

Mike, Sully, Ms. Hofmann and the rest of our faculty just cannot believe that the Fall Semester here at Monsters University has been in full swing for about a month already!  Over the course of the past month, our little "monsters" here at MU have enrolled in a plethora of challenging classes, all of which serve to educate the "whole child."  From community building exercises to Common Core lessons, Class 2H is maximizing our second grade learning experience!   Here is just a small snapshot of some of our campus happenings.  And as you peruse, don't forget the MU motto- "Every dream begins somewhere.  Some are born into greatness and some find greatness on their own."

First day of school jitters?  Not to worry!  Nothing a great book and some "magic" Jitter Juice can't fix!  Check us out as we sample some of the green bubbly concoction (Green Berry Rush Hawaiian Punch and a splash of ginger ale) which helped take away the butterflies.

As if one recipe during the first week of school wasn't enough, Class 2H also took part in creating a Recipe for Success!  If we combine just the right amount of teamwork, effort, kindness, pride, excitement, fairness, honesty, and curiosity, then we are bound to have a tremendously successful school year!  Not only was this activity a wonderful community builder, but it was also a delicious way to start the school year off on the right track!!

After unlocking the secret to a successful year, Class 2H wanted to display our blue and white Monsters University pride.  What better way to show off our school spirit than with an official MU pennant?!  Our pennants are now hanging in the hallway to help showcase our "scary good work!"  Here we are creating the pennants, with a little help from our friends.  Then you can check out the final products as seen from the second grade wing!

Now that we have laid the foundation for Room 27 to be a "community of respect," we can dive into collaborative, engaging, project-based, hands-on learning!  This style of teaching and learning is so motivational that we may even forget we are in school at all!  This is our class making a hula hoop Venn diagram to compare and contrast Miss Nelson and Ms. Swamp from the classic book Miss Nelson Is Missing.  We came up with wonderful character traits to assist Detective McSmogg in finding these missing teachers.  Then we made Missing Persons Posters to aid him in the search.  Have you found Miss Nelson or Ms. Swamp yet??  If so, please contact the children from Room 27 immediately!!

While we wait for Detective McSmogg to crack the Miss Nelson case, we decided to act as detectives ourselves...writing detectives that is!  In an effort to make our MU undergrads more comfortable in sounding out words to practice spelling on their own, Miss Hofmann had the class investigate an old writing journal from 26 years ago!!  These written pieces were FAR from perfect.  The selections contained capitalization and punctuation errors, as well as a ton of misspellings.  Additionally, many of the pieces lacked detail.  In fact, the writing needed so much work that the kids in Room 27 thought the author was in kindergarten when the entries were written.  After the big reveal, Class 2H discovered that the journals were actually written by Miss Hofmann herself when she was in SECOND GRADE!

After getting some great advice and editing tips from the class, Miss Hofmann impressed upon the students that in order to grow as authors, we all must try even if we make mistakes along the way.  However, we will always have the assistance of peer partners to help us grow as writers.  Our Writer's Notebooks are our own work, and we must TRY our best to spell and write on our own!

September might be coming to a close here on the MU campus, but the fall season is just beginning, as is our class journey!  We can't wait to explore more over the rest of the semester.  Stay tuned for the MU Campus Connection Vol. 2, coming to a computer near you next month.  Happy learning!

Children's Choice Book Awards- Read Everything And Decide!

alt text

Over the past month or so, Class 2H has been immersed in the Children's Choice Book Awards for 2014.  Since 2008, The Children's Choice Book Awards have provided children the opportunity to voice their opinions about the books written for them.  These awards help children, librarians, parents, and teachers create lists of books that are motivating and engaging for kids.  Essentially, these books are kid tested AND kid approved!

Each year there are five finalists (books) in the following categories: K-2, 3-4, 5-6, and Teen Book of the Year.  Class 2H read aloud five books selected from the K-2 and 3-4 categories:

Bugs In My Hair by David Shannon
Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote: A Migrant's Tale by Duncan Tonatiuh
Bean Dog and Nugget: The Ball by Charise Mericle Harper
Mustache Baby by Bridget Heos
The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

After reading each selection, we wrote summaries of each book, rated each book, cast our votes online for our favorite book, created persuasive posters to convince others to see our perspective, and wrote an opinion piece ( a review) for the book in which we voted.  Even though the goal of this unit was to focus on opinion writing, we also learned a thing or two about democracy along the way!  AND we confirmed that reading is FUN!!!  We, the kids, should have a voice in what we consider to be quality literature.  Our voices and votes count.  Let us be heard!

Check out our FANTASTIC persuasive posters!  Would these posters convince you to check out these entertaining books from your local library or book store?  Might they persuade you to change your vote last minute??

Once we showed off our powers of persuasion, it was time to cast our votes online.

Next, our pencils and brains were hard at work drafting our mock Kidsday book reviews.  We worked diligently to explore new adjectives and provide supporting evidence with specific examples from our books to strengthen our opinions.  It was certainly helpful to use a checklist as a guide to make sure we included all parts in our review- title/author, summary, opinion, adjectives, examples to support our adjectives, and a convincing closing.

Soon, it was time to meet with our peers to revise and edit our opinion pieces.  Next, we met with the teacher for a final conference.  During this conference we worked on one or two things that would improve our writing.  We didn't correct every single error because we still want it to be our own work!  Finally, we published our reviews!  Here is a snapshot of some of the published pieces.

Oh, you want to know which books won?  Well, in Grades 3-4, Bugs In My Hair won!  Even though nobody in our class voted for fan fave David Shannon, we did learn something about democracy.  Majority rules!!  The book that won in the category K-2 was...drum roll please...The Day the Crayons Quit!  Although only a handful of us voted for this book, it was one of our class faves all year long.  Reading all of these nominated books is a must!  Now it is your turn to READ- Read Everything And Decide!!

Next assignment for our budding journalists during Writer's Workshop?  Fractured fairy tales!!!!
